10 Car Myths You Probably Believe

Premium Gas Will Make Your Car Run Better No Matter What

When you bought your car, hopefully one of the first things you did was check the owner’s manual to determine what octane rating your car requires. The octane rating measures gasoline’s resistance to pinging or knocking (a sign that your fuel is burning inefficiently). This is important for high-performance engines, as fuels with lower octane ratings will cause issues when the fuel is burned.

However, these more expensive gasses aren’t going to make your non-premium car run better. It’s best to stick with the octane rating recommendation that your manufacturer recommends, and save the money if you’re not driving a high-performance vehicle. However, if you do ever hear knocking in the engine (as if a marble is being bounced around inside the car), you can switch to a premium grade gas or ask your mechanic for advice.
