10 Car Myths You Probably Believe

You Need To Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

This myth has been touted by mechanics and dealerships forever. While the 3,000 miles rule was true decades ago, most modern engines can sustain for much longer without an oil change. You can typically go up to 10,000 miles before an oil change in a modern car. This means a once a year oil change is sufficient to keep your engine in optimal health.

Instead of worrying about bringing your car to the shop every 3,000 miles, you should instead check your oil levels every few months and top off the reservoir if it’s low. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick after the car has been sitting for at least ten minutes (you don’t want to touch hot engine oil). Wipe off the oil with a rag, then place the dipstick back in. When you pull it out the second time, the oil should reach the notches at the end of the stick. If not, top off your oil and continue driving as usual.
