Handier even than a second set of eyes, the camera provides a view of all the action below the rear window each time a car is backing up. While it costs a few hundred dollars, the expense is offset by the gadget’s ability to prevent dings during parallel parking and keep family cars from running over objects left in the garage or driveway.
The backup camera works by combining Bluetooth technology and Wi-Fi to deliver footage from the rear of the car to a smartphone. The DIY installation is simple, mostly a matter of mounting a small camera above a car’s rear plate. The only restriction is on cars built prior to 1996. This camera won’t work on them.
