The AMC Pacer
An example of curious 1970s adventurous design, the AMC Pacer appears to be the observation deck on a submersible mounted on four wheels. A particularly adventurous and not-well thought out design was a pair of asymmetric doors – the right door was longer than the left. In the perfect and whimsical world of the designer’s mind, people could climb in the back more easily this way, and it was a great and quirky idea.
When the Pacer was converted into a station wagon, however, reality reared its ugly head. Items stored in the back fell out when the right door was opened, and after it was converted to right-hand drive, the door was on the wrong side.
