The 2020 Audi SQ8 TDI is powered by a beastly 429bhp, 664lb ft twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre diesel V8 with an electrically-powered compressor (EPC) to help reduce turbo drag. Capable of a nimble 0-60mph launch in under 4.6 seconds and with top speeds of 155 mph, the new SQ8 even faster than its predecessor the much lauded Audi SQ7.
To keep things smooth even during extreme maneuvering, the SQ8’s EPC is a major breakthrough:
“When driving straight ahead, they largely act independently of each other, which reduces sprung mass vibrations on uneven roads,” Audi says of the technology.
“At a sportier pace however, the stabilizer halves work as a unit by being turned in opposite directions. This makes the handling of the SQ8 TDI tighter and significantly reduces its roll angle when cornering.”
The 2020 Audi SQ8 TDI is a Mild Hybrid EV
The flagship Audi SQ8 will feature two massive infotainment screens and will be packed with creature comforts that will help it to rival even the most luxurious grand touring saloons out there. A 429 HP mild hybrid turbo diesel V8 engine powered SUV, the SQ8 may be one of the last of its kind as many brands including Audi invest heavily in electromobility.
That 4.0-liter biturbo engine in the SQ8 should be familiar from the Q8. In that car is is capable of up to 664lb ft of torque, launching that car from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph.
An additional 3.0 Liter V6, with around 400 HP is rumored to be going into production as well. This less muscular setup is likely to be sold in markets where a diesel powered engine are no longer legal.
In the Competition for Best German Made SUV
According to Audi, the Diesel engine automatically switches off one of the two superchargers at low speed to help boost fuel economy. The drivetrain is mated to 48V mild hybrid system, operated through a belt alternator starter connected to the crankshaft. While this is not the full-electric many had anticipated, Audi has variety of EV focused models slated for delivery over the next 5 years.
The SQ8 rides on 21-inch wheels a as standard, option with 22-inch upgrades available. Carbon fiber ceramic brake discs are a standard feature.
The SQ8 features an Audi S-specific grille with a matte silver frame and extremely bright LED headlights. To differentiate itself from the previous SQ7, the 8 has re-imagined air inlets and new chrome mirrors. Inside the SQ8 is available in black with a mix of mix of leather and Alcantara, and branded with S logos on the seats.
The EPC helps the SQ8’s engine to be more efficient by helping the drivetrain coast at speeds up to 100 mph. Driven by a 48-volt electrified system it is also extremely useful for helping the SUV from flipping over. When matched with adaptive suspension and optional four wheel steering, the SQ8 is a thrilling and rewarding truck to drive.
Big Step Towards Fully Autonomous Capability
All-wheel drive is a standard option as is an automatic eight speed transmission. Audi Virtual Cockpit, a new addition further blurs the line towards fully autonomous vehicles.
“The car receives data from the traffic light central computer, allowing the driver to choose their speed to match the next green light,” Audi released in its press release.
“While waiting at a red light, the Audi Virtual Cockpit shows the remaining time until the next green light. The system thereby contributes to a predictive and efficient driving style and facilitates a steady flow of traffic.”
