The upcoming Cadillac CT5 is one of the most hotly anticipated cars of 2019.
The General Motors Cadillac division has been synonymous with American luxury ever since the early days of the brand. Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1902 after breaking away from The Henry Ford Company, Cadillac has a long history of producing exciting and thrilling to drive cars.
Slated for a 2020 release date, there is good reason to believe we will soon be learning a lot more about this luxury midsize coupe, and now that 2019 is here, it will not be long before the final details about this $35,000-$45,000 car are released.
Classic Refinement and American Muscle
The 2020 Cadillac CT5 is expected to be unveiled with the following possible engine configurations:
- Turbo 2.0L I-4 engine with automatic engine stop/start functionality
- 3.6L V6 LGX with automatic engine stop/start functionality as a step up from the 2.0L Turbo
- Twin-Turbo 3.0L V-6 LGW with automatic engine stop/start functionality as a step up from the 3.6L V-6 LGX
- Cadillac Twin-Turbo 4.2L V-8 for CT5 V-Sport model making in the vicinity of 500 horsepower
- New turbo-diesel engine for select markets (diesel)
- Electric plug-in hybrid/PHEV (gasoline/electric)
- Supercharged 6.2L V-8 LT4 making in the vicinity of 650 horsepower for CT5-V
It is also expected to feature a GM 10-speed automatic transmission. The plug-in hybrid model will have its own powertrain.
The all-new Cadillac CT5 will probably be based on the longer model of the GM Alpha 2 Platform. Designed for cars with a front engine and rear wheel drive, the Alpha 2 is the same platform the new Chevy Camaro is built on.

Early impressions have many Cadillac enthusiasts excited about the similarities between the 2016 Escala Concept and the forthcoming CT5. The Escala was quite a head turner with it’s long and regal frame, muscular front and expressive rear vertical lighting scheme.
If the CT5 is able to capture the design essence of the Escala, it could be a very successful global player in Cadillac’s growing stable of American luxury cars.

While the 2020 Cadillac CT5 is still yet to be released even to dealers, early rumblings suggest the interior will feature an emphasis on luxury comforts that will offer this car to opportunity to compete with the finest mid-size cars in the world.
The Future of American Luxury
In keeping with a major global automotive trend, the 2020 Cadillac CT5 will be released with a plug-in hybrid/PHEV variant and possibly also a fully electric model. As lithium-ion battery designs improve, so too does the prospect that transportation as we know it will be revolutionized by a true power shift away from the gas guzzling heritage us car enthusiasts know so well.
The 2020 Cadillac CT5 is anticipated to compete with some of the world’s most well loved and driven luxury sports sedans:
- BMW 5 Series
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class
- Audi A6 range
- Lexus GS
- Infiniti Q70
- Acura RLX
- Volvo S90
- Jaguar XE
- Maserati Ghibli
While this will be no easy feat, many believe the 2020 CT5 could have what it takes to usher in a new era of American exceptionalism in the automotive industry.
In North America, the 2020 Cadillac CT5 will replace the current CTS model. In Asia, it will take over for the ATS-L. In the Chinese market, the ATS-L has been extremely well received with many newly affluent Chinese extremely excited to step into a car known for classic American luxury.
With 2018 but a memory and 2019 on the road ahead, there is every reason to be optimistic about cars like the upcoming 2020 Cadillac CT5.
