2020 Subaru Outback Reveal: Refined Upgrades and Better Performance

2020 Outback Subaru

Subaru’s best-selling car will be in its sixth generation for 2020 and continues to have great styling and ample features for its modest price tag.

The new 2020 Subaru Outback debuted at the New York International Auto Show and looks similar to the previous generation but comes with interior and exterior upgrades that enhance performance, comfort, and safety.

So what’s new for the 2020 Outback?

Exterior Upgrades: More Horsepower and Better Towing Capabilities

The Outback comes in a new XT trim level which features a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque—the first turbocharged engine Subaru’s made since 2009.

The XT engine gets 26 miles per gallon on the highway and can tow more than any Outback in the history of Subaru—a whopping 3,500 pounds.

If you want to purchase a base Outback model, that engine still got a mini performance upgrade to 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft. of torque with 23 mpg highway. Subaru claims this is enough to get 600 miles on one tank of fuel.

The suspension on the new Outback is the lightest design yet with a hollow stabilizer bar. Standard roof rails come with retractable tie-downs and crossbars.

Interior Refinery: Style, Comfort, and Storage Reign

Subaru made reducing interior noise on the 2020 Outback a priority, so they incorporated new door weatherstrips and sound-insulating film on the windshield and two front doors. The glass on the new Outback is also a bit thicker. All of these changes make the Subaru Outback three decibels quieter at highway speeds.

Subaru has eight standard airbags and their EyeSight Driver Assist Technology comes with adaptive cruise control and lane centering capability. A new DriverFocus Distraction system can sense when a driver is sleepy or distracted and uses warnings to deter distracted driving.

The new Outback also has an 11.6-inch style touchscreen which is the largest one ever offered on a Subaru. It comes standard on every Outback trim level except the base model.

This is also the first Subaru ever to offer the Chimani app which serves as a guide to over 400 US national parks. And, since the car is taller, Subaru gives the driver a 180-degree view of what’s in front of the car on the 11.6-inch screen.

Other interior upgrades focus on comfort and storage—rear head, shoulder, and leg room have been increased for passenger comfort. A hands-free power gate makes opening the wider rear easy. With 75.5 cubic feet of cargo space, the Subaru is ready for adventure.

Models and Pricing

The 2020 Subaru Outback comes in Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT, although no prices have been released yet. Outback fans will be happy to know this car still remains much the same, just with more features to love!
