After a teaser video was leaked regarding the 2020 Supra by Toyota Mexico on Twitter, we’re finally seeing the official reveal of the Supra at the Detroit Auto Show.

Although we speculated that the Toyota would have a more modest price range than the BMW Z4 it so closely mimics, it turns out their price tags are very similar as well.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Supra’s comeback…

Power and Drivetrain

The 2020 Supra uses the same chassis and drivetrain as this year’s Z4, but this car isn’t all BMW-inspired. The Supra has a body that’s hard to mistake for the Z4, along with performance modifications by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing.

The new Supra maintains its straight-six engine – which buyers loved about old Supras. This engine provides a smoother and more even-revving balance that’s hard to replicate with the V6s we’re seeing in most sports cars today.

With 335 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, the Supra gets to 60 in just 4.1 seconds. Its 3-liter turbocharged engine and automatic transmission featuring eight speeds let the car top out at 155 mph.

As we previously suspected, the new Supra doesn’t come with a manual option, although Toyota has hinted at one in the future.

By lowering the car’s center of gravity, Toyota has given this gem better handling and 50/50 distribution of weight on both the front and rear axles of the car. Multi-link suspension in the rear gives the driver additional control when driving.

Torque vectoring further enhances the Supra’s handling on 19-inch Michelin tires with Brembo brake calipers.

Design and Interior

The Supra’s long hood and duck-tail spoiler highlights its muscular body. Although the 2020 Supra retains a more aggressive posture with its muscular tone, it does away with the back seat that previous Supras have had. Buyers will only see two seats in the updated version of the car.

In base models, sport seats are standard while premium models feature heated leather seats. Inside, a 6.5-inch display comes standard with the option to update the infotainment system with navigation and a JBL audio system for just under $2,500.

Going with premium versions will get you an 8.8-inch touchscreen that already includes the navigation system and JBL speakers in addition to wireless phone charging.

Safety Features of the Supra

The 2020 Supra comes packed with features to keep its passengers safe on the road. These include:

  • Lane-Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Pedestrian Detection
  • The option to add Blind-Spot Monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Parking Sensors to any model for just under $1200.

Availability and Official Pricing

Never fear, Toyota enthusiasts, you won’t have long to wait for this car. The new Supra will officially be for sale in Summer 2019. But what about price?

Base models start at $50,920 with the premium version starting at $54,920. Toyota will also be featuring a Launch Edition for the new Supra which only includes the first 1,500 cars. The Supra Launch Edition comes with distinct design features and dash panels that are made of carbon fiber and numbered. If you want the Launch Edition, be prepared for a $56,180 price tag.

The Supra is much more sophisticated than we originally anticipated, but for the $50,000 price tag, it’s nothing less than you’d expect. Especially for a car that had BMW on board for part of its design phase.
