Formula Drift from a Drone Camera is the Coolest Thing You’ve Seen

If you thought drifting cars couldn’t get any cooler, you definitely haven’t seen the latest drone footage from Formula Drift in Long Beach, California. On the 5th and 6th of April, pro drifters battled it out on Ocean Boulevard in downtown Long Beach.

When these guys burn rubber, it’s 100% quality entertainment. However, this time, we got to see the action from inches away thanks to Johnny FPV. He is a drone pilot who takes part in a new futuristic sport – first person view drone racing.

Thanks to his amazing pilot skills, he managed to fly a camera drone down with the cars, as they took turns drifting around the course in Long Beach. The drone was flying just a few feet above the cars, at times swooping in, just inches from someone’s bumper.

Formula Drift and Johnny’s personal channel uploaded just a handful of small clips, but those were enough to send us rampaging. We got an unprecedented view of Matt Field’s qualifier run in his custom-built Chevrolet Corvette drift car. We also saw a montage of tandem drifts by a number of racers, including Aurimas Bakchis, Chris Forsberg and more.

Until recently, we’ve only been able to see race cars in motion up this close in video games. And honestly, the perspective and quality of the footage is go good, we can hardly believe it’s real.

Drone video capture can revolutionize how we watch motorsports and make the sport even more entertaining for most fans who either stream or watch it on TV.
