On May 1st, Audi celebrated the 10th anniversary from the R8 supercar. For the occasion, the carmaker commissioned artist Fabian Oefner to create this stunning artwork. The exploded view shows the R8 and it’s glorious V10 engine in all their mechanical splendor.
Now, everybody that’s done a little CAD knows exploded views are a standard feature in most 3D modeling packages. However, this is not a mere CGI rendering.
It is, in fact, a photograph. Rather a montage of thousands of photographs. Fabian Oefner is famous for his exploded view projects. To create this image of the R8, Fabian had a team of Audi mechanics disassemble the entire rear end of the vehicle – engine, transmission, intake, exhaust – down to the individual bolts.
Every piece was extracted and meticulously photographed. Fabian then proceeded with his magic, spending god knows how many hours, to arrange the final composition.
The artwork translates the painstaking, decade-old journey Audi has embarked on – to create the ultimate sports vehicle.
Between the 5.2-liter V10 engine perfected by Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracan, the Audi aluminum space-frame and the trademarked Quattro all-wheel-drive system, R8 is a true engineering artwork.
