It’s been 35 years since BMW made its first M5. Six generations later, BMW announced it’s going to make an M5 for its anniversary in 2020.
This anniversary model is based on the M5 competition, although instead of having 600 horsepower, it’ll feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that boasts 617 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque with an 8-speed transmission.
Understandably, it’ll also be a bit faster: about .3 seconds faster than the regular M5, as it gets to 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and can get to 124 mph in 10.8 seconds.
The 35-year addition will also feature 20-inch wheels which black brake calipers, presumably to match the only color it’ll come in, called Frozen Dark Grey II. It’ll have black leather M sport seats with beige stitching and gold trim, including “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” badges throughout the interior (Jahre is German for “years”).
The latest M5 from BMW has all-wheel drive and while it certainly has a focus on comfort, it’s reportedly a bit more skilled on the track than you’d think.
BMW’s M5 anniversary edition also has several packages that come as standard, presumably to help justify its price tag of $127,995, which is quite a bit more than the 2019 M5 which costs buyers a little more than $100,000.
The Executive Package adds luxury features such as massaging seats in the front and power window shades while the M Driver’s Package raises the top speed from 155 mph to 189 mph—and throws in a free pass to the M Driver’s School.
Going into production in September of this year, only 350 of these cars are being made and we’ve no word on how many of those will make it to the United States.
