There’s less than a week until the launch of the new mid-engine Corvette and the tension is becoming excruciating. The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette drops next Thursday, 18th of July in California.
If you can’t make it to the show, that’s okay, Chevrolet will live stream the event, starting at 10:30 PM EDT or 7:30 PM PDT. So, check their profile at a platform of your choice when the time comes.
But that’s 6 days from now and we’ve got plenty of things to discuss, like Chazcron’s latest C8 Corvette renders. He’s been systematically reverse engineering spy shots and sculping the Corvette in 3D for some months now.
The latest batch focuses on the door and rear quarter panel intakes and he’s got some interesting, albeit questionable suggestions.
If you compare the side view to the camouflage-wrapped prototype which CEO Mary Barra teased a few months ago in NYC, you’ll notice a few distinct differences.
Chazcron has rendered the shape of the scoop with 2 internal angles. It appears more confined toward the top and opening up lower down.
Spy photos of the C8 show only one kink in the scoop sort of in the middle. The curve is smoother and more gracious. Also, you may notice a bulging element sitting on top of the door sills – exactly where Chazcron has added the second kink.
However, if you examine any spy photo of the 2020 Corvette, you’d notice the sharp edges and creases aren’t really that sharp.
Could Chevrolet have simply designed a softer-looking car? The answer is yes, but it’s not very likely.
The design already features many strong lines. It makes little sense to have such dramatic interfacing surfaces and then dull the edges with a file.
One explanation is there simply may be some padding underneath the wrap. Even a small amount will make the car look bloated and round over some of the details. And the bulge could be another piece of padding disguising the true shape of the door and intake.
As a result, when they pull the covers, the Corvette will be absolutely smashing.
In any case, Chazcron’s door rendering seems a little extreme. The large protruding piece looks ready to hurt you the second you get distracted and run into the open door.
On the other hand, the rear end looks remarkably close to the supposed spy photo which surfaced a couple of days ago.
