A turbo-charged straight six with the power of a hemi? These are the things that mopar dreams are made of.

Since teasing us in September with the news that they’ve been working on an inline six to add to their already robust lineup, Fiat-Chrysler has now confirmed that they will be releasing it in either their next-generation Grand Cherokee or their Wagoneer remodel, set to make its debut in either 2020 or 2021.

The Tornado

The new FCA straight six will carry with the moniker of the Tornado, to join the ranks of Chrysler’s 2.0-liter turbo-charged Hurricane and 2.4-liter four-cylinder Tigershark. Living up to its name, the Tornado is already rumored to be taking the FCA world by storm. There are rumblings of it potentially serving as a future base engine for the RAM truck line and an altogether replacement for the 5.7-liter Hemi currently sitting in Dodge’s Charger and Challenger.

The Nitty Gritty

The engineers down at Fiat-Chrysler headquarters have had to get a little creative with spacing in order to make the Tornado no more than 3 inches longer than the Tigershark. What does this mean for the engine’s design? Fat trimming, and a lot of it. A smaller head, more tightly spaced cylinders and eliminated cylinder liners are only part of the innovation at play.

No set release date for the Tornado just yet, but it will be interesting to see how Chrysler’s new straight six will have the brand knocking elbows with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
