Jerry Seinfeld’s web based talk show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee debuted its 11th season Netflix July 19th, 2019. The series features Seinfeld driving iconic rides like the 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante and 2004 Porsche Carrera GT with his friends from across the landscape of American comedy.
Seinfeld’s series was originally distributed via Sony’s web-based Crackle channel. All 11 episodes of Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee are streaming now and feature guests like Eddie Murphy, Rickie Gervais, Martin Short, Jamie Foxx, and Seth Rogen.
Eddie Murphy was Jerry Seinfeld’s #1 Choice
Both coming from a heady Long Island 1970’s comedy scene, Murphy and Seinfeld each achieved unique success as comedians. In Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Seinfeld expresses his admiration clearly when he describes the 1987 Eddie Murphy:Raw movie: “Your fame and your power and your intensity was so explosive, it scared everybody.”
Landing Eddie Murphy as a guest was a huge deal for Seinfeld. Though he hasn’t performed stand-up in many decades, Murphy is viewed by many comedians as one of the true greats. Seinfeld emphasized his admiration for the actor known for his role in Beverly Hills cop to USA Today.
Why was it important for you to have Eddie Murphy on the show?
Jerry Seinfeld: He is one of the most important people in stand-up comedy, one of the most influential comedians. All the comedians that started when he was doing his stand-up will mention him as someone that they watched and got interested in stand-up. Having had a little history with him, it seemed like he would be perfect. And I wanted to see if I could bring this other side of him out on the show, (which).has a certain ability to show you people in a different way. They’re not like they are on network talk shows or interviews.
Q: Did any episodes this season go in a direction you didn’t expect?
Seinfeld: All of them. The Bill Cosby conversation with Seth Rogen was a surprise (Rogen says he first learned of Cosby’s history of sexual misconduct from comedian Hannibal Buress in 2014, a month before Buress’s accusation against Cosby in a stand-up routine became a viral sensation). And, in the Bridget Everett (“Inside Amy Schumer”) episode, when I lost my temper about that guy who’s been very negative about me all these years (Everett’s mention of the man’s name is bleeped.). It was fun to get that off my chest.
Q: You’re known for your love of cars. Do you have a favorite?
Seinfeld: My favorite car is the 1958 Porsche Speedster Carrera, which is a certain engine.
