55 years ago this month, the first-ever Ford Mustang was revealed at the World’s Fair in New York. In 2018, Ford Mustang was yet again the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth year in a row.
Ford sold 113,066 Mustangs worldwide in 2018, with more than two-thirds of sales taking place in the United States. The Mustang is sold in 146 countries around the world; some speculate that this availability is what makes this coupe more likely to succeed in the global market.
Since the reveal of its sixth-generation Mustang in 2015, Ford has sold over 500,000 Mustangs. It’s the top seller in the United States, Australia, and Europe.
Ford’s global markets president Jim Farley commented on the Mustang’s success, saying, “We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago. Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V-8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”
Ford says Mustang accounted for 15.4 percent of its market segment. For the horsepower the Mustang offers and its price, it’s hard to come by a better-performing car. Ford recently launched the Bullitt version of its Mustang late last year with 480 horsepower in a six-speed manual.
Mustang enthusiasts are pumped for the 2020 Shelby GT500 which launched at the Detroit Auto Show and reportedly a hybrid version of the vehicle at some point after that. Although Ford has vowed to do away with cars in the coming years, it’ll still keep this classic on board.
