Ford’s replacement of the EcoSport has officially been spied near the automaker’s European headquarters in Germany.

This subcompact crossover SUV was spotted in some serious camouflage, but they can’t hide the unique headlights and body styling of this vehicle.

Although the EcoSport has been previously disappointing to Ford fans, we’re thinking Ford will improve this new version–which may go by a different name–based on these spy shots.

Design Features Borrow from the Focus

We’re sensing this is an early prototype from Ford, given the headlights need some work, so we’re thinking Ford will make some changes to these before unveiling the official model.

However, it’s clear that the design features are reminiscent of the Focus. This resemblance is most apparent in the roof line, which has been sloped to incorporate the crossover body, although the new version of the EcoSport appears to be built on a Fiesta platform.

Although the crossover borrows features from Ford cars, we’re expecting this replacement to be bigger than the previous models of the EcoSport and have more passenger space.

The EcoSport hasn’t been a huge success for the US market so it’s not surprising that Ford is replacing this model, although the EcoSport has been very successful in other countries such as Brazil.

An Upgrade of the EcoSport

The current EcoSport isn’t super impressive, so Ford doesn’t have to think too hard to improve this vehicle.

We do expect Ford to improve both fuel economy and power, two things EcoSport owners were disappointed with in previous models. The EcoSport’s replacement should have more power to compete with other automakers who offer subcompact crossover SUVs, like Chevy’s Trax or the Buick Encore.

At this point, we don’t have an expected release date, although Ford enthusiasts are thinking the official model will be revealed in 2021 for the 2022 model year.

In the next few years, Ford has committed to stop selling its cars (excluding the legendary Mustang, of course), so we’re certainly interested to see what Ford has in store in the future.
