The year is 1989. The first liver transplant takes place. The Berlin Wall comes down. The Mazda MX-5 Miata debuts.

It’s hard to believe that just 30 years ago, the timeless Mazda roadster was unveiled at the Chicago Motor Show. Now, to mark its grand milestone, Mazda designed the appropriately named MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition, which as fate would have it, will debut at the Chicago Auto Show next month.

According to Mazda, “The 30th-anniversary special edition was created as an expression of appreciation for the customers all over the world who have supported the success of the model over the last 30 years.”

Well over 100 million units have been sold since its inception, making it the most popular model from the Zoom-Zoom lineup.

The teaser image released with the announcement of the world premiere doesn’t give fans much to work with: a very blurred image of what’s presumably the RF (as it features a hardtop) with the same Mazda-red hue we’ve come to know and love.

Mazda has been tight-lipped regarding specs of the Miata’s 30th edition thus far—perhaps to make its premiere that much more poignant? Jaw-dropping?

Mazda’s Instagram has started a 30-day countdown to get fans hyped for the highly anticipated reveal. A Miata enthusiast will share his/her story every day until the auto show.

See for yourself what Mazda cooked up next month at the Chicago Auto Show, which opens to the public on February 9th and runs through the 18th.
