Earlier in December, we published an article on the McLaren 720S. The car debuted last year and threatened the status of Ferraris and Porsches all around the world. The British car manufacturer refined the best pieces of its previous vehicles to create this grand masterpiece.
Now, some 12 months later, we get another installment of the McLaren 720S – The Spider.
The Spider is a convertible version of the 720S, giving it that extra bit of luxurious experience, while practically retaining all of the performance embedded in the coupe.
The retractable roof assembly adds only 49 kilos to the weight of the car. The Spider loses just a tenth of a second compared to the 720S coupe.
- 0 – 62 mph: 2.9s
- 0 – 124 mph: 7.9s
It’s not a difference that any driver would be able to pick up. At the same time, it retains the same top speed with the roof up – 212 mph and 202 mph with the roof down.
Even the roof is geared for speed and performance. The car retracts and extends the roof in just 11 seconds. It’s not the fastest power-folding roof ever made. The Mustang boasts a record of 9 seconds. However, the car doesn’t compromise with its elegance and style.
When buying the McLaren 720S Spider, you can opt for the special “electrochromic” glass panel on the foldable roof section. The glass can be made transparent or tinted with the flip of a switch.
Even though the roof doesn’t provide any structural integrity, the carbon fiber chassis is so strong and rigid on it’s own, that McLaren didn’t add any additional reinforcement to the Spider. The “MonoCage II” is a phenomenal engineering feat in itself.
One change over the 720S is reconfigured controls for the rear spoiler which requires different positions when the roof is up or down.
Finally, it comes with a $25,000 price increase over the coupe version, taking the Spider to about $300,000.
