Porsche is developing versions of its 718 Boxster and Cayman that will be completely electric for 2022. They may even offer these models in combination with hybrid options of their current cars.
Porsche chairman Oliver Blume said, “We have prototypes of the 718 running in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built. If you look to the next generation of those cars it is possible, although it is not yet clear whether it would be plug-in hybrid or hybrid.”
Developing New Battery Technology
An internal study at Porsche showed their lithium-ion battery technology wasn’t advanced enough for them to offer all-electric versions with more than 186 miles of range without significant changes. So, of course, Porsche is making those changes to make electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman happen.
Sources reveal that the new hybrid drivetrains for the 718 models are similar to the ones that have already been developed for the 911. However, while the 911 hybrid drivetrain is based on a six-cylinder petrol engine, those for the 718 models are set to use a flat-four engine, similar to the one Porsche used in 2016.
Both of these units have a 48V system which includes an updated version of the 718 models’ seven-speed automatic transmission.
Porsche’s Investment into the Future
Porsche enthusiasts are expecting the hybrid drivetrain will provide more performance and efficiency to these luxury cars, and indeed, Porsche is investing the future of electric. They’re anticipating better batteries for improved energy and increased mileage on their vehicles.
While the all-electric and hybrid versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman are a few years away, we’re expecting the all-electric and much-talked-about Taycan to be revealed later this year for 2020.
Porsche’s lineup is getting increasingly more electric to appease buyers worldwide. Porsche is even starting their own program to reduce carbon emissions called Porsche Impact, which allows buyers to invest money in environmental programs to offset their carbon emissions.
Porsche aims to go carbon neutral with their efforts, which seems to be good news for both us and the planet.
