The current 718 Cayman base models disappointed six-cylinder fans when they were released with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine and the six-cylinder engine was retired from the model line.
Rumor has it, however, that Porsche will be offering a version other than the as-yet-unrevealed 718 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder for the 2020 model year with a six-cylinder engine, according to Automobile.
A non-GT4 six-cylinder option for both the 718 Cayman and the Boxster Spyder would not only give Porsche customers a reason to opt for the car with more aggressive performance and a more traditional Porsche exhaust note, but it would also give buyers an option for a vehicle that has a touch more luxury than the upcoming 718 Cayman GT4.
We’re thinking the six-cylinder option would be a bit more plush and include softer exterior styling. There’s the Clubsport, which is a track car, and then there will be the regular GT4, which is lighter and has fewer comfort amenities than the standard 718. The six-cylinder could be the best choice for both performance and comfort.
Currently, the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport features a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Porsche would offer this engine on a more readily available version of the Cayman for those who miss the six cylinder to go with the balanced performance of the 718.
There’s no official word yet if a six-cylinder would be offered from Porsche for the 718 Cayman below the GT4 or what type of engine it would use. It’s possible that Porsche would also consider using the 4.0-liter from the 911 GT3 as opposed to the engine form the Clubsport.
Since so far only Porsche’s race-ready 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport has been revealed, we’ll have to wait for the official news from Porsche.
