What a Word
Over the last half century or so, the term “supercar” has continuously evolved. It goes without saying that part of the evolution has meant an exponential growth in price. Nowadays, most supercars are out of reach for the average consumer. However, there are some exceptions to this rule as the prices for these highly desirable vehicles vary GREATLY.
New for 2019
The 2019 (C7) Corvette ZR1 coupe starts at around $121,000 USD. While this price tag may seem a bit high, it’s a far cry from the half million a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ will set a buyer back. What’s even more astonishing is that these cars are very similarly spec’d; especially in two of the most important fields for consumers: Speed and Acceleration.

Capabilities
Most supercar enthusiasts understand that the Corvette ZR1 and Aventador SVJ are two very different beasts, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are both technically classified as supercars. Both Chevrolet and Lamborghini state that their respective vehicle can go from 0-60 in under 3 seconds and have top speeds in excess of 210 mph. The Corvette and Aventador will handle differently, there’s no denying that. Nevertheless, if it’s speed and acceleration the buyer is after (as many of them are), there’s isn’t too much separating the Chevy from the Lambo. Does this insane price difference just boil down to branding then?
Considerations
The truth is, there are a number of factors at play. Foreign cars are almost always going to be more expensive than their domestic counterparts in any market. Additionally, Lamborghini inhabits an established place in the supercar market and knows what it can ask for one of its vehicles. This isn’t to say that the Corvette hasn’t ventured into supercar territory in the past. According to Chevrolet, this version of the C7 is the most advanced performance in a production Corvette to date. That being said, a Chevy is a Chevy and a Lambo is a Lambo and there will always be a “badge premium” to consider.
