Luxor-al-Hurghada Road, Egypt

A road can be hazardous for many reasons, and showcasing perhaps the most ominous threat a motorist might encounter is the highway from the ancient Egyptian city of Luxor to Hurghada. Bandits and terrorists patrol the roadside by night, seeking easy prey. This has led to drivers turning off their headlights in order to remain hidden, which has, in turn, increased the collision statistics dramatically. A lack of headlights may seem extreme, but in 1997, 62 German tourists were shot and killed when their bus was attacked by militant Islamics, making the Luxor-al-Hurghada drive a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” kind of situation.
