BR-116, Brazil

If your GPS takes you towards the onramp of this highway running along 2,700 miles of Brazil’s eastern coastline, buckle your seatbelt and stay focused. Crash rates are preposterous, mainly due to the highest concentration of fatigued lorry drivers in the country, the frequency of poor weather, and a record of terrible maintenance on Brazil’s second longest road. Many of the towns along the way tell a sorrowful tale of child trafficking as well. It’s nickname is the “Highway of Death,” and whether the sloping, seaside, panoramic views are worth the risk is up to you.
