Recalling Chevrolet Engine Mounts
One of the first major recalls happened in 1971 when Chevrolet recalled more than six-million Chevy trucks made between 1965 and 1969. The recalled Chevrolet trucks contained defective engine mounts. The left side engine mount would break, starting a chain reaction resulting in the truck being very difficult to stop. It also affected the gear shift. Parking was very difficult.
Two years before, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration was notified by letter about the engine mounts. Nothing was done between 1969 and 1971, even though Chevrolet admitted when notified by the NHTSA that they had been receiving reports for a couple of years about the defect. Chevrolet already knew of more than 63 accidents! They only instituted a recall because of all the negative publicity.
