Acceleration Without Warning
Toyota suffered a problem between 2009 and 2010 when execs had to recall four million of its cars due to gas pedal issues. The recall extended to the company’s Camry, Lexus, Tacoma, Avalon, Prius hybrid, and Tundra lines. The Japanse company claimed that the gas pedals could remain stuck and cause unintended acceleration.
At first, Toyota issued a recall for the driver’s side floor covers, saying it could get caught in the accelerator. Over time, federal officials pressured Toyota to take additional action. The Toyota recall was one of the more surprising recalls in automotive history, as the company retained a solid track record of growth and product reliability throughout the decades.
With that, the company has suffered through other recalls in the past. To remedy the gas pedal situation, Toyota agreed to replace the pedals and provide new floor mats.
