Software Fraud
This software glitch affected over eight million cars, but it also impacted Volkswagen’s reputation in 2016. In Europe, the software within the vehicle produced false emission results, which runs contrary to EU emission laws. The software quirks were found in diesel cars throughout Europe. The recall proves to be a massive undertaking as Volkswagen provides software upgrades spanning across many European nations.
The company spent over 12 billion Euros to correct the issue. A year after the incident, Volkswagen petitioned the EU for more time. As of 2018, Volkswagen has adjusted the software for 80 percent of its cars and will continue to do so until 2020. Regardless, the automaker largely solved the problem, and EU officials remain satisfied with the recall timeframe.
