Anticipation
The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), one of the premier automobile expos in the world, is only 4 months away. The buzz that surrounds this event every year is significant and 2019 is no exception. With domestic automakers shifting their focus to Sport Utility Vehicles and away from traditional sedans, it’s no surprise that new SUV designs will be front and center. However, North American automakers won’t be the only ones debuting redesigned SUVs. For example, it’s very likely that Mercedes Benz will select the NYIAS to debut its new GLS-Class.
An Electric Expectation
In a recent press release from the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the event organizers state that “This year, in addition to displays from every major manufacturer, we are proud to welcome three new car companies to the show floor for the media and public to enjoy.” What this means is still unclear, but with the growing popularity of electric vehicles, it’s possible that the next competitor(s) to Tesla is set to debut.
A Lingering Question
The bottom line is that the public won’t know what’s behind the event’s doors until they open on April 19th. NYIAS understands that part of the game is building hype around the famed auto show, reinforcing the desire for manufacturers to display their latest and greatest. On the other hand, there are still individuals that are going to be in the market for small inexpensive cars. Show chairman John LaSorsa states that “we’re expecting over one million consumers to come through the doors.” Not every one of those million is going to be in the market for an SUV and/or electric vehicle. It will be interesting to see, specifically from Asian automakers, who is or isn’t still in the compact car game.
