Lemhi Pass, Montana and Idaho
In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition came to Lemhi Pass, a two-mile span stretching across the present-day border between Montana and Idaho. Bridging the gap between the ranges of the Rocky Mountains, as you venture across the Continental Divide you will come across some of the most imposing landscapes you have ever encountered. If you are a lover of mountainous ranges, you will find them in abundance along this historic drive. 4×4 drivers can even take in the views through one of the many single-lane Forest Service roads along Beaverhead Rock State Park in Montana or the Salmon National Park in Idaho.
Travel Tip: If you make this drive in August you will get the chance to see the annual Lewis and Clarke Festival’s historic reenactments, which – you will happily note – includes men dressed in buckskin and traveling on dugout canoes.
