A French Law Makes it Compulsory For Drivers To Have Their Own Breathalyzers

Ah, France. The land of baguettes, revolutions, and…breathalyzers? Indeed, a law passed in 2011 made it compulsory for all passenger vehicles to have a breathalyzer kit that the drivers can use for “self-check” before getting behind the wheel. You were forced to do so even if you never drank a sip of alcohol in your whole life and if you didn’t comply you risked a fine issued by the very people who, in a country with normal auto laws, would be the ones holding all the breathalyzers: the police. The authorities, apparently aware of the absurdity of this law but not aware enough to remove it, have indefinitely postponed the issuing of fines for not having breathalyzer kits.
