Jeep Quadratrac Emergency Drive

If off road is your preferred method of travel, Jeep has you covered. Available in the 1970s, the wonder of vacuum operated Four-Wheel-Drive enabled the driver the option of locking the hubs via vacuum without getting out of the vehicle to do so. On certain models, including the CJ-5 and the J-10 truck, an oversized glovebox mounted switch was available for serious off roading. With the left side in green and denoting “regular driving” and the right side in red labeled “emergency drive,” one would naturally be curious as to what constitutes “emergency driving.” Under normal off road driving circumstances, Jeeps do incredible. However, when your tires just keep slipping and you can’t get enough grip, emergency drive locks the hubs, allowing all four wheels to be driven at the same speed, allowing traction to go to every corner, freeing the stuck rig.
