Accidents Cause Teenagers, Teenagers Cause Accidents

There’s a reason why teenagers pay much higher rates for auto insurance than older drivers: The leading cause of death for teenagers is car accidents.
Teenagers’ lack of driving experience means that they often don’t recognize dangerous situations and take appropriate precautions. Lack of maturity often means teenagers will speed, text while driving, drive without a seat belt, and tailgate.
Many states have enacted laws under the GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing Programs) and those laws are designed to minimize teenagers getting into accidents. Teens often aren’t allowed to drive after midnight, drive with other teens in the car, or other restrictions. These laws have meant a 38% reduction in auto accident fatalities in recent years. Unfortunately, not all states have these laws.
