On August 5, 1987, Matthew Broderick was already a major movie star after leading roles in Ladyhawke, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Wargames, when he was driving a rented BMW in Enniskillen, Ireland. The BMW collided head-on with a Volvo driven by Anna Gallagher. Gallagher and her mother Margaret Doherty were killed. Broderick’s girlfriend, Jennifer Grey, sustained only minor injuries. Broderick sustained a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, a concussion, and a broken leg. Broderick later said he had no recollection of why he was in the wrong lane that day, or of anything else that happened that day. He avoided a potential prison sentence and was only charged with careless driving and fined $175.

Broderick and his wife Sarah Jessica Parker own a vacation home in County Donegal, Ireland.
