43 miles of utter terror separated the Bolivian Capital La Paz and Coroico for many years. An estimated 200-300 deaths occurring every year for decades. 26 vehicles on average plummeted down from the dizzyingly high road perched on the side of a mountain, mainly due to shoddy gravel roads being swept away by rain, and the fact that traffic came from both directions. A new highway has since been constructed, removing the title of “World’s Most Dangerous Road” from El Camino de la Muerte, but for literally thousands of families, the Yungas Highway will always be regarded with mourning and dread.
